North Side Housing and Supportive Services is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 1983, serving men who are homeless or formerly homeless. Respect and empathy are as important in rebuilding lives as food, shelter and supportive service. Dedicated staff and volunteers empower our consumers with skills and motivation. NSHSS does all in its power to educate the community on issues of homelessness and to advocate for system change to improve the quality of life for people struggling with the indignity of this societal challenge.

Our mission is to end homelessness in the lives of individuals by providing housing and comprehensive supportive services. We also strive to eradicate the conditions that cause, contribute to and exacerbate homelessness.

In 1983, members of three congregations along with other Lakeview citizens concerned about the issue of homelessness in the Lakeview community started an overnight, emergency shelter located in the lower levels of the Lake View Lutheran Church and Wellington Ave. United Church. The two sites provided a temporary “home” to hundreds of men and women over the years. Later, the agency began to serve only men in the Lakeview Lutheran Church site as a result of cuts in the initial funding.

Today, North Side Housing and Supportive Services (NSHSS) is a comprehensive human services agency focusing on ending and preventing homelessness. Because homelessness is a complex issue, NSHSS provides an array of services to our consumers to help our consumers address a wide range of difficult issues and achieve self-sufficiency.

North side provides permanent supportive housing, community outreach and intensive case management, integrated health care, a community food-pantry and Pathways employment program. North Side will expand its supportive housing program for veterans chronically homeless in the near future. We hope you will continue to visit with us to stay abreast of our plans and if you are someone seeking a home, perhaps you will grace us with your presence soon.
